‘Down The Lane’
When I started to want to get out and make photographs, it was during the pandemic.
The lockdowns actually pushed me to shoot locally in areas that were rarely photographed. Overtime, I benefitted from shooting in spaces like these significantly; not only did it widen my vision of photography early on, but it made me appreciate the smaller details in life that I had previously been unobservant towards. Since then, I have based my practice around turning the ordinary into something visually compelling.
“Down The Lane” is my way of paying homage to the time that I discovered this way of approaching photography. This finding served as a break in the cloud in an otherwise difficult time for me in an otherwise difficult time during the pandemic. It encouraged me to try and make work very close to my home in Shropshire, which later inspired the making of “Down The Lane”. The entire series is made within a two-kilometer radius of my home. I started making the work when I was 16 years old.
The series pushes focus to the subjects I grew up surrounded by, yet paid little attention towards. I’m using the camera as a tool to uncover the depth in the everyday that not many people seem to see. There’s a lot to gain from appreciating the little things.
“Down The Lane” has recently been involved in one of the Sola Journal Instagram takeovers.
